U.S. Bishops Issue Statement on Assisted Suicide

On Thursday, June 16, 2011, the U.S. Bishops approved and released their statement on physician-assisted suicide, To Live Each Day with Dignity. In the opening they said:

“To live in a manner worthy of our human dignity, and to end our days on this earth in peace and comfort, surrounded by loved ones—that is the hope of each of us. Christian hope also sees these final days as a time to prepare for our eternal destiny. Today, however, many people fear the dying process…Our society can be judged by how we respond to these fears.”

The bishops drew on the wisdom of Catholic teaching, the ethos of Western civilization and human compassion in crafting this statement which speaks to all people of good will. It is available in English and Spanish for download and reprint here.
