President Obama nominates Army Gen. Martin Dempsey to replace Adm. Mike Mullen as Joint Chiefs chairman.

If confirmed by the Senate, Dempsey would be in the key position of being Obama's senior military adviser overseeing the drawdown of troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, while also working with incoming Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, who still needs to be confirmed by the Senate, in establishing priorities for cutting defense spending.

U.S. Soldiers Mark Memorial Day

The Daily Beast
U.S. soldiers marked Memorial Day in Iraq and Afghanistan with solemn flag-raising ceremonies, candlelight vigils, and prayer. In Iraq, where about 46,000 soldiers still remain, 100 people gathered at the headquarters of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, holding candles as Black Hawk helicopters swarmed overhead. In Afghanistan, where about 94,000 soldiers are stationed and where 1,400 U.S. service members have died since the beginning of the war there, troops raised flags in honor of the fallen. President Obama is scheduled to give an address on Memorial Day.

What to do if you see a drunk driver

Mighty As Nails! Nailwood®
Advisory Message has been issued by the LASD - HQ Newsroom (SHB), Los Angeles County Sheriff.

Sunday May 29, 2011 5:18 PM PDT

What to do if you see a drunk driver

It happens every day. Drunk drivers get on the roads, endangering our friends and loved ones. Sometimes, we witness these drivers on the road, weaving in and out of lanes or traveling down a highway going the wrong direction. Quite often, responsible citizens are left asking themselves—what do I do?

1. First, stay as far away from the other vehicle as possible.
2. Second, do not try to pass the vehicle or signal the driver to pull over. Doing so could result in a collision.
3. Third, take notice of the license plate number of the driver along with details of the vehicle including make, model and color. However, make sure you don’t compromise your own safety trying to obtain this information.
4. Finally, pull over and call 911. Give the exact location of the vehicle, including the name of the road or cross streets and the direction the vehicle is traveling. Give a complete description of the vehicle and the manner in which the vehicle is being driven.
5. Then leave the rest up to the peace officers who work hard to make our roads safe.
Thank you for caring and taking the time to make the roads safer for everyone.

WANTED: Armed Takeover "Greenhorn Bandits" - 3 banks in San Dimas, Diamond Bar, Redlands (PHOTOS)

(To see photos, click on the hyperlink at the bottom of this message)
At least three men known to law enforcement as the “Greenhorn Bandits” are being sought in connection with three bank robberies during the past two weeks in Los Angeles and San Bernardino Counties, announced Steven Martinez, Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI in Los Angeles, on behalf of the multiple agencies investigating the robberies; including, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department the Redlands Police Department and the FBI.

Witnesses have described the Greenhorn Bandits as either black or Hispanic males between the ages of 25 to 33, and between five feet, eight inches to six feet tall. The bandits can be seen in bank surveillance photographs wearing bandanas and hooded sweatshirts.

During the three robberies, the bandits were seen using handguns and witnesses described being ordered to get on the ground and put their hands up, while the suspects demanded cash.

An additional suspect was seen driving from one of the banks in what was described as a silver or light-colored Dodge Avenger. In a separate robbery, the suspects were seen leaving in a silver or light-colored Chevy Colorado truck.

The group was nicknamed the Greenhorn Bandits due to fact that witnesses described them as clumsy and inexperienced, which investigators note could add to the potential for violence. The suspects are considered armed and dangerous.

The Greenhorn Bandits are suspected in the following robberies:
5/26/2011 COMMUNITY BANK, 200 E. CITRUS AVE, REDLANDS
5/23/2011 CAL BANK & TRUST, 530 W. BONITA AVE., SAN DIMAS
5/16/2011 CAL BANK & TRUST, 1200 S. DIAMOND BAR BLVD, DIAMOND BAR
Anyone with information is urged to contact the FBI or dial 911. In the greater Los Angeles area, the FBI can be reached 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at 888 CANT HIDE (888 226-8443).

Countdown to the Closure-Extended 53-Hour Closure of I-405 Fwy Planned in Mid-July

Advisory Message has been issued by the LAPD Headquarters.

Friday May 27, 2011 4:20 PM PDT

Countdown to the Closure-Extended 53-Hour Closure of I-405 Fwy Planned in Mid-July

Los Angeles, Calif. – Plan Ahead, Avoid The Area, Or Stay Home. That’s the message public safety officials are sending to the public in anticipation of a planned 10-mile, 53-hour closure of the I-405 freeway between the U.S. 101 and I-10 on the weekend of July 16-17, 2011 for planned demolition work on the Mulholland Bridge, part of a major I-405 improvement project.

The Los Angeles Police Department, Los Angeles Fire Department, California Highway Patrol, Los Angeles Department of Transportation, Metro and Caltrans are informing the public in advance that if they do not have a critical need to be in or near the vicinity of the closure, they are being asked to avoid the area.

The specific freeway closure boundaries are as follows:

• Northbound I-405: 10-mile closure between I-10 and U.S. 101

• Southbound I-405: 4-mile closure between U.S. 101 and Getty Center Drive Ramps

Motorists who must travel through the Los Angeles metropolitan area are advised to use alternate freeways within the region, including the 5, 15, 23, 55, 57, 101, 118, 126, 210, 605 and 710 freeways to bypass the impacted area. In addition, public transportation options are available such as the Metro Rail service within L.A. County and Metrolink servicing the five county Southern California region. Additional alternate route information will be made available on the project web site at www.metro.net/405.

On Friday, July 15, ramps along the 10 mile closure will begin to be shut down as early as 7 p.m., and closure of freeway lanes will begin at 10 p.m. to ensure full freeway closure by midnight. The closure will continue until 5 a.m. Monday morning, July 18. Ramps and connectors will be reopened by 6 a.m. During this closure, the Mulholland Bridge, I-405 freeway and access ramps will be closed.

Sepulveda Boulevard is intended as an alternate route for local resident access only. Sepulveda Boulevard will not have the capacity to accommodate both local and diverted freeway traffic. Those using Sepulveda Boulevard should expect extreme congestion and lengthy delays. Motorists should instead use alternate regional freeway routes to completely bypass the Sepulveda Pass.

Traffic conditions on local streets and freeways within the region of Los Angeles County and beyond are expected to be severe, with significant, multi-hour delays. Motorists who must travel during this weekend are advised to plan ahead, monitor real-time traffic conditions prior to beginning their trips, and follow alternate routes that are provided. Motorists will be informed of the closure in advance by Caltrans-operated freeway message signs with coverage extending into neighboring counties and other metropolitan regions in the state.

Construction crews for the I-405 Sepulveda Pass Improvements Project plan to demolish half the Mulholland Bridge in the Sepulveda Pass of Los Angeles in order to build a new, widened bridge, and a major carpool lane. The construction activity is part of a $1 billion capacity improvement project for the I-405 freeway.

To reduce the work's effects on local traffic flow, the Mulholland Bridge demolition and reconstruction will be conducted in two phases. The southern side of the bridge will be demolished first, followed by approximately 11 months of south-side bridge reconstruction. Upon completion of the south side, the northern side of the bridge will be demolished and rebuilt in the same manner. Another extended freeway closure period will be required for the second phase of work approximately one year later.

The Mulholland Bridge, like the Sunset and Skirball Center bridges, must be removed and rebuilt to accommodate the widening of the I-405 freeway as part of the 10-mile northbound carpool lane construction project. The project will officially complete the northbound carpool lane network between Orange County and the San Fernando Valley. Additional project benefits include improved freeway safety through standardized lane and shoulder widths, greater ramp capacities at key locations, new sound and retaining walls, widened overpasses, widened and seismically updated bridges and new landscaping within the project corridor.

The $1 billion project is a joint effort between Metro and Caltrans, and is being constructed by Kiewit Infrastructure West Co. It is scheduled for completion in 2013. For latest updates visit the project web site at www.metro.net/405 or follow the project on twitter: twitter.com/I_405 and Facebook at facebook.com/405project.

Sheriff Baca Honors Fallen Peace Officers

Community Message has been issued by the LASD - HQ Newsroom (SHB), Los Angeles County Sheriff.

Sheriff Baca Honors Fallen Peace Officers

Sheriff Lee Baca presided over the 42nd Annual Los Angeles County Peace Officers’ Memorial Ceremony on Wednesday, May 25, 2011, to commemorate the lives of those peace officers who died in the line of duty while serving the residents of Los Angeles County. Attending the memorial ceremony were numerous federal, state, and local dignitaries, in addition to family members, friends, and co-workers of the fallen officers.

Held in the beautiful Memorial Park at the Sheriff’s Training Academy and Regional Services (STARS) Center in Whittier, the ceremony included musical performances by members of law enforcement and the release of white doves on behalf of the fallen officers. Regrettably, the names of the following officers were added to the memorial wall:

 Mighty As Nails! Nailwood®
Deputy Charlene M. Rottler, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, who died on January 3, 2010, as a result of injuries she sustained during an on-duty traffic accident in 1972, when a drunk driver collided into her patrol car.

Officer Philip Ortiz, California Highway Patrol, West Los Angeles Office, who tragically died on June 22, 2010, when he was struck by a reckless vehicle speeding on the shoulder of the freeway while conducting a traffic stop on June 9, 2010.

Bronze plaques with the names of the two officers now join the other 477 law enforcement officers whose names are inscribed on the Memorial Wall to honor their dedication to duty and the ultimate sacrifice they made. As part of the ceremony, Sheriff Baca accepted a torch delivered by members of various law enforcement agencies following a three-day Memorial Torch Relay Run totaling 339 miles.
The relay run commenced at the Sherman Block Sheriff’s Headquarters Building and traveled to each mainland Sheriff’s Station. The Memorial Flame at the Los Angeles County Peace Officers’ Memorial Wall was ignited in tribute to the fallen officers.

Breaking News Alert: CIA to search bin Laden compound

May 26, 2011 12:57:57 PM

----------------------------------------
Pakistan has agreed to allow the CIA to send a forensics team to examine the compound where Osama bin Laden was killed, giving the agency permission to use sophisticated equipment in a search for al-Qaeda materials that may have been hidden inside walls or buried at the site, U.S. officials said.

The arrangement would allow the CIA for the first time to enter a complex that it had previously scrutinized only from a distance, using satellites, stealth drones and spies operating from a nearby safe house that was shuttered when bin Laden was killed.

Two New York City Officers Acquitted of Rape

Breaking News Alert

The New York Times

Two New York City Officers Acquitted of Rape

Two New York City police officers were acquitted on Thursday of the most serious charges in the rape of a drunken woman who had been helped into her apartment by the officers while on patrol.

The verdict provides some measure of vindication for the officers, Kenneth Moreno and Franklin Mata, and brings to an end a criminal case that drew outrage across the city when the officers were indicted in 2009.

Still, the jury convicted both officers of official misconduct for entering her apartment, but found them not guilty of all other charges, including burglary and falsifying business records.

John Edwards Seeks Plea Deal

TheDailyBeast.com

Former North Carolina Senator John Edwards is trying to avoid a grand-jury indictment on charges over alleged campaign-finance violations. Justice Department prosecutors and lawyers for Edwards are discussing a last minute plea deal, according to The Wall Street Journal. If the talks fail Wednesday, prosecutors are expected to get a grand-jury indictment against him. Edwards has been under investigation for having his affiliates allegedly funnel more than $1 million in donor money to Rielle Hunter, the woman with whom Edwards had an extramarital affair and fathered a child, as well as to an aide who initially took the fall for Edwards and claimed the child was his. Federal election laws prohibit the personal use of campaign donations and require full disclosure of contributions.

This gives Gaza Palestinians a way to freely enter and exit their territory for the first time since 2007, when Hamas overran the territory, and Israel and Egypt closed the crossings.

Avoid the 100 DUI Campaign Set for the Memorial Day Holiday Weekend

Community Message has been issued by the LASD - HQ Newsroom (SHB), Los Angeles County Sheriff.

Tuesday May 24, 2011 10:27 PM PDT

Avoid the 100 DUI Campaign Set for the Memorial Day Holiday Weekend

(Los Angeles County, CA) – The Avoid the 100 Los Angeles County DUI Campaign, in which the Los Angeles County Sheriff‟s Department is a participating agency, will be deploying officers and deputies this holiday weekend at DUI/DL Checkpoints and DUI Saturation Patrols in order to arrest impaired drivers who still don‟t get the message.

The Memorial Day weekend ( 05-27-11 through 05-30-11) is the unofficial “kick-off” of summertime recreation and holiday travel, along with many college and high school graduations where thousands will celebrate their accomplishments. Unfortunately, the next 100 days will also see a rise in deaths and injuries as far too many individuals get behind the wheel impaired.

The enforcement campaign begins Friday night with DUI/DL checkpoints and special DUI Saturation Patrols deploying in numerous cities. More local DUI Saturation Patrols will be out on Saturday and Sunday nights as well. The Los Angeles County Sheriff‟s Department will be deploying all available deputies Memorial Day weekend within our contract cities.

“Sobriety Checkpoints are a proven deterrent along with the „High Visibility‟ enforcement campaigns to change behavior such as drunk driving, driving unrestrained and driving distracted,” said Chris Murphy, Director of the California Office of Traffic Safety. “Drivers who know that there is Zero Tolerance when it comes to drunk driving take measures to use a Designated Sober Driver and call 9-1-1 to report a suspected drunk driver weaving down the road ahead of them.”

 Mighty As Nails! Nailwood®
Law enforcement officials throughout the county are asking for your support during this holiday weekend and all summer:
• Be responsible when hosting a party. Don‟t allow friends and family to drink to excess
• Always promote a Designated Sober Driver
• Report Drunk Drivers, Call 911!

Funding for the Avoid Campaign is through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The Avoid Campaign will also deploy checkpoints and DUI patrols during the Independence Day Holiday and for the August/Labor Day DUI Mobilization.

Home burglary prevention safety tips:
1. Get to know your neighbors. Exchange names, phone numbers, emails, and other information that makes your neighborhood become closer as friends and neighbors. Consider starting a Neighborhood Watch group on your street.
2. Write down the license plate numbers and descriptions of strange vehicles and their occupants. Make a note of the time and day the vehicle was parked on your street.
3. Leave a light or stereo/TV on or use a timer for your lights if you will be away for a full day or longer.
3. Put a secondary lock on all windows.
4. Get and close heavy drapes -- especially on rooms where there is expensive equipment. Thin, sheer drapes allow burglars to look inside.
5. Install a peephole on all exterior doors. You’ll be able to see outside without opening the door.
6. Safety coat or frost all garage windows. Don’t let criminals see when your car is gone.
7. Make sure your garage side door is made of solid-core wood, reinforced steel, or fiberglass, and has a deadbolt lock. Padlock the throw-hatch on your garage door when you’re out of town and invest in a keychain remote opener.
8. Remove shrubs and trees from in front of windows so they can't hide possible intruders. Keep shrubs trimmed low.
9. Plant rosebushes or other thorny landscaping in front of all vulnerable windows. This makes getting close to such windows practically impossible.
10. Get a dog. A barking dog, whether inside the house or in the yard is the best deterrent to burglars.
11. Install motion detectors in areas where no one should be. This way, you know something isn't right when they go off.
12. Consider installing a security system. These systems are fairly inexpensive to put in.
13. Have the post office hold your mail while you are on vacation. As an alternative, ask one of your neighbors to bring in your mail and newspapers. Do not leave mail in your mail box to be picked up later. Take it to the post office or hand it personally to the postal service letter carrier.
14. Identify your valuables by engraving your drivers’ license number.
15. Photograph and record the serial numbers of all valuables.
16. Photocopy the contents of your wallet and other documents.
17. Store the copies in a safe deposit box or with a relative
18. Hide spare keys in less obvious places.
20. Pretend to be a burglar. Walk around your property and ask yourself: How would I break in? Examine your house from the street, where are the blind spots? What are the most vulnerable areas? Stand outside the windows and look in, make sure no valuables are visible. Most burglaries occur during the day through the back and
side doors when you are away.
