2011 Overall Crime declines compared to 2010 in LASD policing area - 119 pages of detailed crime stats

First Quarter Overall 2011 Crime Declines Compared to 2010 in Communities Policed by the LASD - Over 100 pages of detailed preliminary crime statistics

Over 100 pages of details showing preliminary reported crime statistics for the unincorporated communities and 42 contract cities policed by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department can be found at www.lasd.org. Visit the “Crime Prevention and Information” page or access them directly at http://file.lacounty.gov/lasd/cms1_148405.pdf

These include year to date (three month) 2011 preliminary reported crime statistics compared to 2010 and compared to five years ago (2006). Reported crimes for each sheriff's station and city include homicides, robberies, burglaries, etc. (To review the statistics, open the file, right click with your computer mouse and use the search engine: http://file.lacounty.gov/lasd/cms1_148405.pdf).

As of the end of March 2011, preliminary reported crime data shows that reported overall incidents of violent crimes (Part 1) have declined 10.91 percent, and serious property crimes reported (Part I) have declined by 8.21 percent in Sheriff’s patrol areas countywide, compared to last year at this time. These numbers combine to show an 8.73 percent decrease in overall Part I crimes.

As of the end of March 2011, preliminary reported crime data shows that criminal homicides in Sheriff’s patrol areas have decreased by 6.67 percent (five homicides), compared to the same year-to-date (three-month) period last year (46 homicides last year compared to 41 this year). This follows a five-year overall decrease in homicides in 2010. 2010 had the lowest homicide rate (allowing for population changes) in Sheriff’s Department patrol areas since 1965.

Child safety tips away from home:
1. Teach your children to ask permission before leaving home.
2. Remind your children not to walk or play alone outside.
3. Avoid alleys and shortcuts that take you out of view.
4. Don’t let anyone get too close to you.
5. Don’t accept rides from someone you don’t know.
6. If harassed by someone in a car, turn around and go in the opposite direction.
7. Beware of who and what is going on around you.
8. Set up “what if” situations and ask your children how they would respond. “What if someone
asked you to help find a lost puppy? What would you do?”
9. Teach your children to “Check First” with you if there is a change of plans.
10. Pre-plan and know places on your route where you might get help.
