Obama cancels planned meeting with Russian leader over Snowden incident

Los Angeles Times | August 7, 2013 | 7:09 AM President Obama has canceled plans to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the wake of that country’s decision to offer temporary asylum to Edward Snowden, the former spy agency contractor who leaked secret information, the White House announced today. Obama still plans to travel to Russia in September for the G-20 summit in St. Petersburg, but the White House said the Moscow visit with Putin would be replaced by a trip to Sweden to discuss trade and investment. CHP officer found guilty of murdering her husband

California Highway Patrol officer Tomiekia Johnson was convicted today of murdering her husband after a night of drinking more than two years ago. The verdict comes after Johnson tearfully testified Friday that she and her husband, Marcus Lemons, were struggling over her gun when it accidentally went off the night of Feb. 21, 2009.

Magnitude 7.6 earthquake hits eastern Turkey

Three scientists share Nobel Prize in Physics

Two scientists from the United States and one from Australia have won the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced Tuesday.

Half of the award went to Saul Perlmutter from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and University of California, Berkeley. The other half went to Brian P. Schmidt of Australian National University and Adam G. Riess of Johns Hopkins University and the Space Telescope Science Institute.

Deputy received FBI cash in L.A. County Jail sting

FBI agents probing misconduct allegations in the L.A. County Jail orchestrated an undercover sting in which they paid about $1,500 to a sheriff's deputy to smuggle a cellphone to an inmate, sources said.

The revelation is the first public indication that the FBI's investigations into claims inmate beatings and other deputy misconduct have uncovered possible criminal wrongdoing.

Reports of gunman at Santa Monica College

Santa Monica College has been placed on lockdown as authorities check into reports of a man with a gun on campus.
There were also reports that a nearby middle school was on lockdown because of the report.
A Santa Monica police spokeswoman told The Times the department got a call about a possible shooting on campus but have not found any victims or a weapon.

Authorities at Yosemite National Park said today that they had recovered the body of Hormiz David, one of three young adults who were swept over Vernal Falls on July 19.

The 22-year-old Modesto resident's body was discovered by search-and-rescue personnel about 1 p.m. Friday. The bodies of Ninos Yacoub, 27, of Turlock, and Ramina Badal, 21, of Manteca remain missing, according to authorities.

Ahmed Wali, Afghan president's brother, shot dead

LAUSD bans flavored milk

The L.A. Unified School District Board of Education today voted to stop providing chocolate or strawberry-flavored milk in school cafeterias as of July 1, becoming the largest school system in the nation to pull flavored milks out of schools.

Judge refuses to overturn ruling against Prop. 8

A federal judge today refused to invalidate last year's ruling against Proposition 8, ruling that the gay jurist who overturned the same-sex marriage ban had no obligation to remove himself from the case because of his long-term relationship with another man. Chief Judge James Ware of the U.S. District Court in San Francisco refused to invalidate last August's ruling by Judge Vaughn R. Walker, although Walker's ruling remains on hold pending further consideration to the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.
