TEL NOF AIR FORCE BASE, ISRAEL — Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit returned to Israel Tuesday morning after five years of captivity in the Gaza Strip, the Israeli army said.
His release by the militant Palestinian group Hamas was the first and crucial step of a prisoner swap that will include the release of 1,027 Palestinian prisoners from Israeli jails.
Shalit, 25, was brought from Gaza into Egypt, then turned over to Israeli officials and taken across the border. He is expected to speak to relatives by telephone and undergo a medical examination before being flown to this air base, where his relatives are waiting.

Insurgents Disappear When U.S. Tips Off Pakistan

The Daily Beast
The Morning Scoop
This might pose a problem to the U.S. and Pakistan's new joint counterterrorism plan. The U.S. has given Pakistan the location of insurgent bomb-making factories several times in recent weeks, only to have the insurgents learn their cover had been blown and disappear. The U.S. gave Pakistan the intelligence as part of a trust-building exercise following the raid that killed Osama bin Laden, but now officials are worried the information was either accidentally leaked or deliberately given to the insurgents. The leaks will likely be a primary topic of conversation between Pakistani officials and CIA Director Leon Panetta, who arrived in Pakistan Friday.

Breaking News Alert: Egypt to open border crossing for Palestinians, easing Gaza blockade

Egypt will open its only crossing with the Gaza Strip this weekend, the Cairo military government announced Wednesday, significantly easing a four-year blockade on the Hamas-ruled territory but setting up a potential conflict with Israel.

This gives Gaza Palestinians a way to freely enter and exit their territory for the first time since 2007, when Hamas overran the territory, and Israel and Egypt closed the crossings.

Breaking News Alert: In ordering bin Laden raid, Obama rejected the advice of some of his national security team, he says

May 8, 2011 7:18:34 PM

----------------------------------------
President Obama faced sharply divided counsel and, in his mind, barely better-than-even odds of success when he ordered the daring May 1 commando raid that killed al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, the president said in an interview broadcast Sunday. "At the end of the day, this was still a 55/45 situation," Obama told CBS's "60 Minutes" in his first broadcast interview since bin Laden’s death. "I mean we could not say definitively that bin Laden was there. Had he not been there, then there would have been some significant consequences."
