Politics News Alert: House defeats proposal to raise debt limit

The GOP-controlled House on Tuesday overwhelmingly rejected a proposal that would have increased the nation's ability to borrow money without also making major cuts in federal spending. The legislation, reflecting the Obama administration's initial request for such an increase, was defeated on a bipartisan vote of 318 to 97 with 7 Democrats voting "present."
