Cheer on the Law Enforcement Torch Run Relay to support Special Olympics athletes (Mon-Fri,June 6-10) LACo

Who: The public is invited --- Anyone who wishes to support efforts to raise funds and awareness for the Special Olympics of Southern California.

What: During the week prior to the Special Olympics Summer Games, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department personnel will proudly join athletes and officers from nearly 300 different law enforcement agencies and military personnel for the Torch Run for more than 1,500 miles.

The public is encouraged to come out and support the runners and athletes as the torch passes by.

The torch (known as the “Flame of Hope”) will be used to light the Opening Ceremony cauldron which symbolizes the start of the 2011 Summer Games.
When: Starting Monday, June 6, 2011, and ending on Friday, June 10, 2011

Why: The Law Enforcement Torch Run is the largest grassroots fundraiser and public awareness vehicle for Special Olympics worldwide. In 2010, officers raised more than $1.2 million for Special Olympics Southern California.

“The support we receive from law enforcement is absolutely invaluable. Southern California law enforcement officers raised more than $1 million for our athletes and programs last year. This is a phenomenal achievement and great proof of their dedication to our cause,” said Bill Shumard, President and CEO of Special Olympics Southern California. “To our athletes, the law enforcement officers are heroes and role models that bring a positive attitude and morale to our cause.”
