TEL NOF AIR FORCE BASE, ISRAEL — Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit returned to Israel Tuesday morning after five years of captivity in the Gaza Strip, the Israeli army said.
His release by the militant Palestinian group Hamas was the first and crucial step of a prisoner swap that will include the release of 1,027 Palestinian prisoners from Israeli jails.
Shalit, 25, was brought from Gaza into Egypt, then turned over to Israeli officials and taken across the border. He is expected to speak to relatives by telephone and undergo a medical examination before being flown to this air base, where his relatives are waiting.

TRIPOLI, Libya -- Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton traveled to the Libyan capital on Tuesday, bringing encouragement and millions of dollars in new U.S. aid to a transitional government struggling to consolidate its control over a country ravaged by dictatorship and civil war.
Clinton arrived in Tripoli just after noon, becoming the first cabinet-level U.S. official to visit the country since autocratic leader Moammar Gaddafi was driven from the capital nearly two months ago.
She was scheduled to meet with top officials of the transitional government and address a town hall-style gathering during a five-hour visit steeped in both security and symbolism.

Officials at the iconic D.C. structure expect to reopen Nov. 12 but say repairs to the intricate masonry could take a decade to complete. In addition to the $15 million for repairs, the cathedral will seek to raise $10 million for operating expenses through the end of 2012. Go to washingtonpost.com/local for photos and video.
Earlier versions of this alert incorrectly said that the cathedral needed $25 million for repairs, and that the operating expenses would cover through the end of June.
