Century Station wins Excellence in Community Policing award. Community partnerships are up & crime is down.

Century Sheriff’s Station was recently the recipient of the 2011 James Q. Wilson Award for Excellence in Community Policing, for the extraordinary efforts in working with the community to increase partnership and decrease crime. The results included a major decrease in assaults and murders over the past several years.

In an effort to break the cycle of violent crime in the Florence/Firestone Area, Sheriff Lee Baca provided a specific plan to strengthen public safety and quality of life.

The plan centered on "Public Trust Policing," where law enforcement and the community work together to address crime and quality of life issues. This would be carried out by expanding community watch programs, increasing the use of technology, furthering community-oriented policing, and expanding youth outreach, intervention and prevention programs.

Under the leadership of Century Sheriff’s Station Captain James Hellmold and Lieutenant John Babbitt, this program resulted in a 72 percent reduction in murders, and a 69 percent reduction in firearms related assaults.

Furthermore, it fostered an environment in which Neighborhood Watch and other community groups flourished. The Sheriff’s Department enjoys extremely high participation and interaction with local youth in positive programs that serve to improve the relationship between law enforcement and the community.

Century Station enjoys strong community support, and residents know the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is committed to supporting their efforts to maintain peace. The men and women at Century Sheriff’s Station were extremely proud to receive the James Q. Wilson Award for Excellence in Community Policing.
Century Sheriff’s Station polices the city of Lynwood and unincorporated communities in Los Angeles, Willowbrook, Athens Park, Walnut Park, and Florence/Firestone.
