California Highway Patrol officer Tomiekia Johnson was convicted today of murdering her husband after a night of drinking more than two years ago. The verdict comes after Johnson tearfully testified Friday that she and her husband, Marcus Lemons, were struggling over her gun when it accidentally went off the night of Feb. 21, 2009.

Sheldon Adelson is the primary owner of the corporation that owns the Sands hotel and casino complex in Las Vegas, as well as casinos and resorts in Macau, China, Singapore and Pennsylvania. The new $5 million pledge was first reported by the Las Vegas Sun.

Four students were dismissed from a Florida university in connection with the death of Robert Champion, the drum major who died last month in what officials have called a hazing-related death, a spokeswoman from the school told CNN.
Authorities have not specified what caused the 26-year-olds death after a performance last month with the Marching 100 band from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University. His family has said it plans to sue the school "to get answers."
Earlier Thursday, Florida Gov. Rick Scott called for a review of state universities' hazing and harassment policies.

TEL NOF AIR FORCE BASE, ISRAEL — Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit returned to Israel Tuesday morning after five years of captivity in the Gaza Strip, the Israeli army said.
His release by the militant Palestinian group Hamas was the first and crucial step of a prisoner swap that will include the release of 1,027 Palestinian prisoners from Israeli jails.
Shalit, 25, was brought from Gaza into Egypt, then turned over to Israeli officials and taken across the border. He is expected to speak to relatives by telephone and undergo a medical examination before being flown to this air base, where his relatives are waiting.

Three scientists share Nobel Prize in Physics

Two scientists from the United States and one from Australia have won the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced Tuesday.

Half of the award went to Saul Perlmutter from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and University of California, Berkeley. The other half went to Brian P. Schmidt of Australian National University and Adam G. Riess of Johns Hopkins University and the Space Telescope Science Institute.

The Senate reached a bipartisan agreement intended to end a dispute over disaster relief spending that threatened to cause a partial shutdown of the government at the end of the week.
In two votes, the Senate approved short-term spending measures to fund the government for the start of the new fiscal year that begins Saturday. The deal hinged on FEMA's new assessment that it has sufficient funding for the rest of the current fiscal year.
The measures now go to the House, which would need to approve them to ensure the government continues to be funded after Friday.

LASD TRANSIT SECURITY ASSISTANTS INVOLVED IN AN INJURY TRAFFIC COLLISION IN THE VALLEY
At 5:46 this morning, Three Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Security Assistants travelling south on Canoga Avenue, in a marked Sheriff’s van, were struck by a Toyota van driven by a female adult travelling west on Parthenia Street. Sheriff’s Motor Deputies on scene report that two of the Security Assistants received minor injuries, and one was transported to a local hospital with a possible broken leg.
Preliminary reports from bystanders at the scene are that the driver of the van ran the red light causing the collision. The Security Assistants were on their way to the Metro Orange line, where they are Fare Inspectors for the Sheriff’s Transit Services Bureau, the LASD unit that has the policing responsibilities for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
LAPD and LASD investigations into the crash are ongoing. No further information is available at this time.

AB 499, the bill that permits 12 year old children to give consent without their parents' knowledge for vaccines or other medication to prevent sexually transmitted diseases, today advanced to the floor of the CA Senate. It will likely come to a vote within a week. This is the last step before it goes to the Governor to be signed into law.

ACTION

Urge senators to vote NO vote on AB 499. It is bad healthcare policy, and an attack on the rights of parents and the rights of children to have the protection and guidance of their parents.

Talking points, and background

This bill is one of the most egregious violations of parental rights, next to the right to provide abortions for minors without parent knowledge. If it passes, parents will have no right to decide whether or not their child will receive vaccinations that could jeopardize their health. Additionally, children will be approached by Planned Parenthood and other adults encouraging them to be vaccinated to prepare them to become sexually active. AB 499 is an outrage that must be stopped, but it will take a massive public outcry to do it.

Please ask your state senator to vote NO on AB 499 today. It is critical to get others to call as well. We must keep up the pressure until the final vote.

This bill is an end run by the pharmaceutical giant Merck to push their vaccine, Gardasil, on California children at taxpayer's expense. A major public outcry in 2007 killed an effort to make the vaccinations mandatory when Merck proposed it then. Now, if AB 499 becomes law, children as young as 12 years old will face coercion from adults motivated by profit or other agendas to receive vaccines that they don't need and could be harmful.

The Center for Disease Control has reported deaths of 51 girls and 2 boys after being administered Gardasil, just one of the vaccines covered by this bill. There are many more reports of children maimed for life from the drug. (See http://truthaboutgardasil.org/.) Children are not equipped to evaluate risks and stand up to pressure from adults without the support of their parents.

Community: Military Order of the Purple Heart Elects William R. Hutton as National Commander (former LASD)

Bill Hutton enlisted and served in the United States Marine Corps from 1965-1969 and was assigned to the Third Battalion, Fourth Marines, Third Marine Division during his tour of duty in Vietnam (1966).
While serving in Vietnam, he was wounded three times with the last occurring on September 28, 1966 while leading his company up Hill 400, which was well fortified with North Vietnamese machine gun bunkers and had held off the Marine Company for two days. For his actions, Bill was awarded the Silver Star, Purple Heart medal with second star and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry.
After returning to the states, Bill was assigned to the Military Police in Santa Ana, California. While serving in that capacity, he was sent on temporary orders to attend the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Academy for an intense 16 week course in law enforcement procedures.
After graduation, Bill returned to the Marine Air Facility in Santa Ana and was assigned to the Criminal Investigation Division (CID). Hutton was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps as a Staff Sergeant (E-6) in 1969.
In April, 1969, Bill joined the ranks of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department where he served in every major division including narcotics for over thirty five years. In 1993, Bill was awarded the Medal for Bravery and the Distinguished Service Award for saving the life of a fellow deputy whose weapon had been taken in a struggle with a "Hell's Angel" motorcycle club member who was under the influence of heroin.
Bill has been a member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart since 1997 and has held every leadership position in the Order up to and now including, National Commander. Bill is most proud of his work as a Department Service Officer and his close relationship with the hard working National Service Officers who provide services to our veterans and their families through the National Service Program of the Military Order of the Purple Heart..
Hutton’s goals during his tenure as Commander include improving all aspects of service to veterans and their families, expanding and improving the National Service Program of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, improving communications at all levels within the organization, and expanding the active involvement of local chapters and state departments in veteran support activities.
The organization now known as the "Military Order of the Purple Heart of the U.S.A. Inc.," (MOPH) was formed in 1932 for the protection and mutual interest of all combat wounded veterans and active duty men and women who have received the decoration. Chartered by the Congress.
The MOPH is unique among Veteran Service Organizations in that all its members were wounded in combat. For this sacrifice, they were awarded the Purple Heart Medal. With grants from the MOPH Service Foundation, the MOPH and its Ladies Auxiliary promote Patriotism, Fraternalism, and the Preservation of America's military history. Most importantly, through veteran service, they provide comfort and assistance to all Veterans and their families, especially those requiring claims assistance with the VA, those who are homeless, and those requiring employment assistance.
Through the VAVS program, MOPH volunteers selflessly provide assistance to hospitalized veterans at VA medical facilities and State Veterans Homes.

Community: Stolen Rembrandt artwork recovered intact

Late Monday evening , the Watch Commander of Marina del Rey Sheriff's Station received information from an informant regarding the possible location of the stolen Rembrandt drawing entitled “The Judgment.” The artwork was stolen late Saturday evening, August 13, 2011, from a Marina del Rey hotel.
The Watch Commander along with the Investigating Detective responded to Encino around midnight, where they recovered the drawing. Early Tuesday morning an employee of the Linearis Institute verified the drawing.
No suspect(s) are in custody. The investigation is ongoing.

Reports of gunman at Santa Monica College

Santa Monica College has been placed on lockdown as authorities check into reports of a man with a gun on campus.
There were also reports that a nearby middle school was on lockdown because of the report.
A Santa Monica police spokeswoman told The Times the department got a call about a possible shooting on campus but have not found any victims or a weapon.

Deputies were conducting a fare inspection operation at the Hollywood and Vine Metro Red Line subway passenger station Wednesday at 4:00PM, when they contacted Suspect Bret Newman, a 51-year old male White resident of Los Angeles.
As they spoke to him, he unexpectedly ran south into the Metro train tunnel toward the Hollywood and Western Metro passenger station. The Metro Transit Services Bureau deputies used their radios to inform the Metro Rail Operations Center that a man had run into the tunnel. Metro control de-energized the south tunnel third-rail power, to prevent the man from being electrocuted.
As a result of Suspect Newman’s extremely dangerous action, train service was delayed.
Suspect Newman was taken into custody by assisting Metro Transit deputies as he emerged at the Hollywood and Western station about a mile away. Suspect Newman said he ran because he thought he had an arrest warrant. This type of action by a passenger is both dangerous and rare.

He was arrested for trespassing and delaying a Metro train. He did not have any arrest warrants.

Authorities at Yosemite National Park said today that they had recovered the body of Hormiz David, one of three young adults who were swept over Vernal Falls on July 19.

The 22-year-old Modesto resident's body was discovered by search-and-rescue personnel about 1 p.m. Friday. The bodies of Ninos Yacoub, 27, of Turlock, and Ramina Badal, 21, of Manteca remain missing, according to authorities.

U.S. stocks plunged at the open Monday as Wall Street had its first opportunity to react to Standard & Poor's downgrade of U.S. debt.

At the open, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 184 points, or 1.6%; the S&P 500 lost 30 points, or 2.5%; and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 82 points, or 3.2%.

Late Friday, S&P downgraded the United States' credit rating by one notch to "AA ", removing the world's largest economy from the Triple A-club for the first time in history.

Economists and investment strategists said an initial shock is not surprising - global markets plunged on the news as well - but emphasized that the downgrade itself should not impact markets too much.

Man & 5 teen girls rescued from Malibu cliff by LASD & LACoFD Saturday (Photos)

A day hike and wilderness adventure in Malibu Creek State Park Saturday, ended in an LA County Sheriff's and Fire department team rescue of a 34-year old Los Angeles man, his 14-year old daughter and her four teen girlfriends aged 14-16.
After hiking for a while, the group found more than they bargained for when they became stranded on a treacherous cliff slope on the North/East section of Goat Butte Mountain in Malibu (unincorporated Los Angeles County).
Two members of the group were able to make it down the slope to safety, while one of the remaining four stranded victims was able to get a cell phone connection at about 5:00PM and called to the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
The Sheriff's Malibu Search and Rescue Team (MSAR) was immediately activated, responded to the area, and were able to locate the victims.
A Sheriff's MSAR ground team reached the victims and set up a technical rope lowering system. The victims were safely lowered to the base of the mountain where they were escorted to the Sheriff’s Department Command Post at 1925 Las Virgenes Road, Unincorporated Malibu.
Sheriff's MSAR was assisted by Los Angeles County Fire Engine Company 67 and Helicopter 16, who extracted one of the teen victims via helicopter cable winch, because she was too frightened to be taken down the slope.
The rescue was completed at about 9:00PM
None of the victims were injured during the incident.
They thanked rescue personnel before heading home to Los Angeles.
The Sheriff’s Malibu Search and Rescue Team are certified experts in mountain rescue. They are comprised of an elite cadre of reserve deputy sheriffs and high risk civilian volunteers that work out of the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station under the command of Sheriff's Captain Joseph H. Stephen.

Thousands Stolen From Elderly Woman By Burglars

In the early morning hours of Friday, July 15, an elderly female was awakened by the sound of someone forcing open the rear door of her home.

The victim grabbed her purse containing $25,000 in cash and attempted to escape undetected. As she tried to exit through the front door, she dropped the purse, which was immediately retrieved by the suspects.

The victim went to a neighbor’s house and sought help as the suspects fled on foot. Witnesses saw the suspects drive away in a late model gray Chevrolet Malibu, prior to the arrival of Norwalk Sheriff’s Station deputies.

A neighbor found the victim’s purse in a nearby trash can, with the cash and a wedding ring missing from inside of it.

The victim told detectives she suffers from a severe medical condition and was saving the money to help pay for her anticipated funeral.

Governor Signs Bill Giving Legislature Control over Social Science Curriculum

Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill Thursday allowing the legislature to set social science curriculum in the schools. A similar bill was vetoed by former Governor Schwarzenegger last year.

SB 48 (Leno, D-San Francisco) Instruction: prohibition of discriminatory content, was promoted as a way to prevent bullying, although many other laws address the situation. (See below.) It requires highlighting the contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) individuals in history lessons, as well as disabled people and a host of cultural groups.

The need for special exceptions was questioned by opponents of the legislation, including the California Catholic Conference, who pointed out that anti-discrimination on sexual orientation and ethnicity is already law, the language is overly vague, and the measure (which will probably now be litigated in court) will continue to complicate the job of teachers.

On July 15th at approx. 11:15 PM a fatal hit and run occurred on Saticoy St. at Jordan Ave. in Canoga Park.

The suspect vehicle fled West on Saticoy St. and is described as a late model Dodge Durango white in color or a late model Toyota Tacoma with a camper shell white in color.

There is collision damage on the rear and front of the suspect vehicle.

"...Law enforcement is aware and will not cite vehicles until the first day of the second month after the vehicle registration expires. For example: A vehicle with a registration expiration date of July 10th would not be cited for delinquent registration prior to September 1, 2011."

News Release - California Department of Motor Vehicles

DMV has resumed normal processing timeframes for July 1, 2011, and later registration renewals. Vehicle registrations due in July, August and September, can be renewed now using DMV's online renewal program without waiting for a billing notice from DMV.

Billing notices are being mailed out as quickly as possible. NOTE: The late payment penalty amounts described on the notices do not apply. Vehicle owners are being provided a 30-day grace period for the remainder of the year. A special insert (see http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/newsrel/newsrel11/julyrenewals.htm#ISD94image ) in the billing notice provides more information about the grace period.

Fee changes include:

Vehicle License Fee rate decreased from 1.15% to 0.65%, and,
A $12 increase in the registration fee (from $34 to $46).
Customers are encouraged to utilize the renewal by mail or online Internet renewal program to renew their registration. These alternative service delivery options will automatically waive late fees for first 30 days after expiration date. New registration cards and stickers will be issued as quickly as possible.

Sheriff's Department's rescued horse delivers filly early;...born with a "star" on her forehead.

In February 2011, Sergeant John Hargraves from the Parks Bureau of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, adopted two horses, Miss Ladybug and Dude from an animal shelter.

Both horses had been abandoned by their owners and were found starving. It became John’s goal to get the horses back to a healthy condition so they could be trained to work Mounted Enforcement Detail.

John began a feeding and training program for both horses. They both began gaining weight. As time went by, John noticed that Miss Ladybug’s belly was larger than normal.

Suspecting that she may be pregnant, John had the veterinarian check on Ladybug. It was confirmed she was pregnant with a due date of October 2011.

Well, the veterinarian was off by a few months. On July 7, 2011, John was walking out to his corral at 4:50 in the morning, when he heard Ladybug whining. He shined his light towards her corral and saw an extra pair of eyes looking back. It was a little filly, red like her mom, with a large white star on her forehead.

The veterinarian said she was born early because Ladybug had been starved by her previous owners; which often results in premature births. Both mom and baby are doing fine.

John has not come up with a name yet but is considering either “Star” or “Diamond.” In a few years, she may be John’s primary horse for mounted enforcement work.

Vaccination Without Parent Knowledge Bill's Opposition Growing
the bill which permits 12 year old children to give consent, without their parents' knowledge, for vaccines or other medication to prevent sexually transmitted diseases, was surprisingly pulled from the Senate floor July 7 and referred to the Senate Appropriations Committee. A new hearing has been scheduled for August 15.

This move is no doubt in response to letters and phone calls of opposition flooding state senators' offices as the awareness of this sinister bill is increasing all over the state. Because the bill was crafted to avoid key words used in such medical legislation, organizations like the National Vaccine Information Center, a watch-dog group that is concerned with educating the public on problematic vaccines, was completely unaware of the bill, as were a number of other interested groups. Thanks to CCG's outreach efforts, these organizations are now becoming actively engage.
Bill's Author Responds to CCG on Pharmaceutical Blog

The fact that the California Catholic Conference and CCG have been leading the way on this bill has come to the attention of the pharmaceutical trade press. An article in the award winning pharmaceutical trade blog Pharmalot quoted CCG and gave credence to arguments of an end run that drug companies and providers are trying to make through this bill. They will profit from by-passing parents and coercing children into receiving the vaccines for certain STDs. The article is linked to others reporting how similar efforts have backfired in the past.

The bill's author, Toni Atkins of San Diego, apparently felt she needed to respond but did so in a most disingenuous way. She indicated that she was approached to author the bill by the American College of Gynecology (ACOG), not the drug company Merck, the manufacturer of controversial vaccine Gardasil. Some of the readers of the blog called her on this fact by pointing out that Merck had given almost $500,000 in funding to ACOG last year and another $100,000 in the first quarter of 2011. In an effort to dismiss the critical issue of parents' rights and a child's right to the counsel of her parents on grave matters concerning health, Atkins then responded a second time by saying that Catholic opposition to the bill was really just an extension of our opposition to abortion and "reproductive health of women".

Professionals, Teachers, Historians Should Determine Curriculum

Politicians are not the right people to determine school curricula – whether in science or social studies. Educational professional, working with teachers and parents and school boards, are better able to instruct our children.

SB 48 (Leno) Instruction: prohibition of discriminatory content would be yet another political idea imposed on the public school curriculum—a mandate "prohibitingdiscriminatory content" in history lessons. Laws promoting acceptance and tolerance of those with diverse heritage, racial identity, sexual orientation, religious conviction or physical ability are already in statute. A law which micromanages the study of history for political correctness is both unwise and dangerous.

As the Los Angeles Times editors wrote on April 12, 2011, letting politicians write our history could lead students to a skewed perception of historical reality: "Minority groups, the elderly and the disabled must be represented proportionally and never portrayed in a bad light. People in poor countries aren’t supposed to be show as poor, lest they be stereotyped… So poor people aren’t poor and the elderly are physicallyfit and financially sound, according to the textbooks…Fables don’t make for solid instruction. History is the great story of people, groups and movements—their faults aswell as their accomplishments—shaping the world up through the events of today. It is a story best told by historians, not by politicians."

Masked woman arrested for breaking into home & attempted murder of mom & toddler in Lancaster

A female (suspect) arrived at the Lancaster home of a 40-year old Hispanic woman on Friday morning, July 1. The suspect was wearing white construction coveralls and a face mask.

Suspect Dierdre Allen, a 49-year old African-American woman who resides in Los Angeles, knocked on the door of the home on the 43000 block of Gadsden Ave.

At about 10:30 AM, when the door was answered by a relative of the intended victim, the suspect forced her way inside and brandished a replica handgun. A struggle ensued between the suspect and several of the victim’s family members. The suspect was wrestled to the ground and held until Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies arrived minutes later.

Lancaster Sheriff’s Station deputies searched the suspect and found a digital recording device. The recording included messages by the suspect wherein she provides step by step instructions to herself. They include what to do to kill the victim and her toddler child, and making it appear to be a murder suicide.

The intended murder weapon appears to be poisoning by an unknown chemical. A jar containing a chemical substance was also located at the scene.
Deputies arrested the suspect and booked her at Lancaster Sheriff’s Station for attempted murder. They discovered a warrant for her arrest as a parolee at large from San Diego. She is being held without bail. No one else has been implicated in the alleged attempted murder.

The victim was home at the time the suspect forced entry inside, but was not involved in the altercation. The husband lives with the victim at the residence where the incident occurred. The suspect and the victim’s husband know each other.

Pakistan’s top military spy agency has arrested some of the Pakistani informants who fed information to the Central Intelligence Agency in the months leading up to the raid that led to the death of Osama bin Laden, according to American officials.

Pakistan’s detention of five C.I.A. informants, including a Pakistani Army major who officials said copied the license plates of cars visiting Bin Laden’s compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, in the weeks before the raid, is the latest evidence of the fractured relationship between the United States and Pakistan. It comes at a time when the Obama administration is seeking Pakistan’s support in brokering an endgame in the war in neighboring Afghanistan.

The fate of the C.I.A. informants arrested in Pakistan is unclear, but American officials said that the C.I.A. director, Leon E. Panetta, raised the issue when he travelled to Islamabad last week to meet with Pakistani military and intelligence officers.

On Thursday, June 16, 2011, the U.S. Bishops approved and released their statement on physician-assisted suicide, To Live Each Day with Dignity. In the opening they said:

“To live in a manner worthy of our human dignity, and to end our days on this earth in peace and comfort, surrounded by loved ones—that is the hope of each of us. Christian hope also sees these final days as a time to prepare for our eternal destiny. Today, however, many people fear the dying process…Our society can be judged by how we respond to these fears.”

Yesterday, on a party-line vote, the California Senate Judiciary committee passed AB499 without debate. The bill permits 12 year old children to give consent, without their parents' knowledge, for vaccines or other medication to prevent sexually transmitted diseases. More Background: CA Legislature: Children Should Decide on Controversial Vaccinations

In a state of over 37 million people and thousands of associations, only three people were there to stand up against medical witnesses, state agencies, and others advocating for an end-run on parental rights to push a sinister agenda of sexualizing our children. If I had know that would be the case, I would have sent out a call for every able-bodied person within driving distance of Sacramento to show up and pack the hearing room.

Unanswered Questions

Recognizing that the committee was stacked in favor of passage, in my testimony, aside from the violation of parental rights to protect the welfare of their minor children, I appealed to the consciences of the members to consider flaws in the poorly thought-out bill and appealed to the committee to address the following questions:

The Center for Disease Control has reported deaths of 51 girls and 2 boys after being administered one of the vaccines covered by this bill (Gardasil). Why are there no assurances in the bill that children will be told that receiving these vaccines could cause them to die, although the risk is small. What about the other possible debilitating side effects of these vaccines?

How can a 12 year old evaluate risks and statistics? How do their brains process such information? Has there ever been a study on that?

Children can be easily intimidated or influenced by the authority of adults. There is money to be made by administering these vaccines and other drugs by the drug companies and service providers (like Planned Parenthood). What protects children from coercion driven by the profit motive?

If there are allergic reactions and other side effects to the vaccines, how will parents be able to recognize them and act on them quickly if they don’t know that their child has received the vaccine? It is critical to react quickly to save lives and to prevent long-term consequences for the child.

No one on the committee asked any of these questions, not even the lone Republican who showed up for the hearing. The committee chairman, Senator Noreen Evans, said the bill was necessary because parents are not competent to make sure their children are protected from sexually transmitted diseases, so the state needs to step in. The statement made evident their intent to try to vaccinate every child they possibly can even though there was a public outcry when they tried to make such vaccinations mandatory in 2007.

I do not believe California parents have become so cynical and apathetic that they are ready to give up on their rights and the health and welfare of their children. We have got to do a better job of spreading the word and getting more engaged in opposing this bill as it comes to a vote on the Senate floor. We are a small apostolate with limited resources. We need your support and participation. Here is what needs to be done.

First, take out your checkbooks and write a tax deductable check to Catholics for the Common Good Institute. You can find the address or make an online donation at http://ccgaction.org/donate/CCGIdonation. The threat is ongoing, so please consider signing up for monthly donations. We are overwhelmed by the volume of legislation geared to undermining children’s understanding of love, relationships, family, and marriage. We need your help.

Write a letter or make a phone call to your state senator and ask them to vote NO on AB499. Find your state senator at http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/yourleg.html.

Write a letter to the editor. Express your feelings about this bill and ask others to join you in opposing it. If you write a letter to the editor, also send it to CCG so we can share it with other letter writers. Send it to info@ccgaction.org.

Call radio talk shows to explain what AB 499 does and why people need to oppose it.

If you know doctors or other medical professionals who will oppose AB499, ask them to write letters to the editor or commentaries.

Make announcements about this bill at meetings and events in which you participate. We need to let everyone know about the pending threat to our children.
Send this email to at least 5 other people and ask them to get involved in this issue.
And, most importantly pray.

Drive-by Shooting in Pacoima Leaves 20-year-old Dead

Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) Foothill Area detectives are asking for the public’s help in providing any information that would lead to the arrest of the suspect(s) who shot and killed a man in Pacoima.

On Wednesday, June 15, 2011, at around 10:25 p.m., officers responded to a radio call regarding a shooting in the 13100 block of Pinney Street, in Pacoima. When the officers arrived, they found four gunshot victims, including 20-year-old Angel Lopez, a resident of Los Angeles.

Los Angeles City Fire Department paramedics rushed all four victims to a local hospital where Lopez died. The other victims are in stable condition.

Detectives believe that Lopez was part of a group of four males sitting in front of a residence in the 13100 block of Pinney Street when the suspect(s) drove up in an unknown type vehicle and fired numerous rounds towards the group. The motive for this murder appears to be gang related.

Anyone with information about this crime is urged to call Foothill Area Homicide Detectives Farell or Byers at (818) 834-3115. FEMA, Red Cross & Ad Council launch new Ready Business PSA’s to urge small businesses to prepare in advance of an emergency

Up to 40% of businesses affected by a natural or man-made disaster never reopen, according to the Insurance Information Institute.

According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, small businesses represent more than 99 percent of all employers. Unfortunately, small to medium-sized businesses are also the most vulnerable in the event of an emergency. An Ad Council survey reported that nearly two-thirds (62%) of respondents said they do not have an emergency plan in place for their business. By taking steps ahead of time, many of these businesses can be better prepared to survive and recover after an emergency.

“Businesses small and large make up the backbone of economies in communities across our country,” said FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate. “Putting a disaster plan in motion now will improve the likelihood that businesses and organizations will not only survive and recover themselves, but also help their neighbors and communities recover more quickly.”

Judge refuses to overturn ruling against Prop. 8

A federal judge today refused to invalidate last year's ruling against Proposition 8, ruling that the gay jurist who overturned the same-sex marriage ban had no obligation to remove himself from the case because of his long-term relationship with another man. Chief Judge James Ware of the U.S. District Court in San Francisco refused to invalidate last August's ruling by Judge Vaughn R. Walker, although Walker's ruling remains on hold pending further consideration to the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.

"It is with great disappointment that I call on Representative Anthony Weiner to resign," DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz said in a statement Saturday. "The behavior he has exhibited is indefensible and Representative Weiner's continued service in Congress is untenable.

"This sordid affair has become an unacceptable distraction for Representative Weiner, his family, his constituents and the House -- and for the good of all, he should step aside and address those things that should be most important -- his and his family's well-being."

Asian gang members arrested in San Gabriel Valley in connection w/ trafficking of Ecstasy pills

On June 8, 2011, at about 5:00 PM, deputies assigned to the Sheriff’s Department Asian Gang Team of Operation Safe Streets Bureau stopped a vehicle for minor traffic violations in the “Valu Mart” parking lot near the corner of Rosemead Boulevard and Longden Avenue in Temple City.

The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, Jimmy Chau (22) of San Gabriel, appeared very nervous and displayed some unusual behaviors prompted the deputies to investigate further. A check of Chau’s vehicle resulted in the discovery of about two thousand pills of Ecstasy. Chau was arrested for suspicion of narcotics trafficking.

Further investigation by investigators lead them to a house located in the 9000 block of Longden Avenue, Temple City. Investigators prepared a search warrant, which was approved by a magistrate for that residence and the home of Chau, located in the 5500 block of Walnut Grove in the city of San Gabriel.

As a result of the search, an additional three thousand pills of Ecstasy were seized from the Longden Avenue location. Also seized from that location were one handgun, a shotgun, a bullet proof vest, small amount of Methamphetamine, several assault rifle parts, live bullets, gang indicia, and several thousand dollars in cash.

Andy Lin (30) of Temple City was arrested for suspicion of narcotics trafficking and weapons charges from the Longden Avenue location.

At the Walnut Grove location, over a thousand dollars in cash were seized but no other narcotics were located. Chau, a Cantonese/Vietnamese-American, was booked at Temple Sheriff’s Station and is being held under a $30,000 bail.

Lin, a Taiwanese-American, was also booked at Temple Sheriff’s Station and is being held under a $100,000 bail.

Both Chau and Lin are members of the “Wah Ching” Asian street gang.

As of the end of May 2011, preliminary reported crime data shows that reported overall incidents of violent crimes (Part 1) have declined 10.96 percent, and serious property crimes reported (Part I) have declined by 5.47 percent in Sheriff’s patrol areas countywide, compared to last year at this time. These numbers combine to show a 6.54 percent decrease in overall Part I crimes.

As of the end of May 2011, preliminary reported crime data shows that criminal homicides increased by two in Sheriff’s patrol areas(71 YTD in 2010 and 73 YTD in 2011), but have decreased by 35%. This follows a five-year overall decrease in homicides in 2010. 2010 had the lowest homicide rate (allowing for population changes) in Sheriff’s Department patrol areas since 1965.

Critical Missing Woman Maria Ledesma

Los Angeles: The family of Maria Ledesma and The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) Foothill Area officers are asking for the public’s help in finding the 50-year-old missing woman.

On Thursday, June 9, 2011, Maria Ledesma walked away from her home in the 11700 Terra Bella Street in LAPD’s Foothill area and she has not returned home. Ledesma has diminished mental capacity and is presumed to have become lost. She also takes daily medication necessary to prevent critical health issues.

Maria Ledesma is described as a 50 year old female Hispanic, five feet tall and weighs about 150 pounds. She has a light complexion with shoulder length black hair and was wearing a white shirt with a grey sweater and black tights. Ledesma is presumed to be on foot but may have taken public transportation.

Newt Gingrich’s campaign manager and a half-dozen senior advisers resigned on Thursday, two aides said, dealing a significant setback to his bid to seek the Republican presidential nomination and severely complicating his plan to make a political comeback.

The campaign manager, Rob Johnson, along with advisers in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina, joined together to step down after a period of deep internal disagreements about the direction of the campaign.

Motorist Shot and Killed on the 110 Freeway, LAPD Detectives need the public's help.

Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) Criminal Gang Homicide Division detectives asking for the public’s assistance in providing any information that would lead to the arrest of the suspect (s) who shot and killed a motorist on the 110 freeway.

On Thursday, June 9, 2011, at around 2:30 a.m. the California Highway Patrol (CHP) received a 9-1-1 emergency call from a motorist who was on the southbound 110 freeway at the transition to the eastbound 91 freeway. The CHP responded to the area and found a Black male, later identified as 55-year-old Ivan Spencer, a resident of Los Angeles, inside a champagne-colored Toyota Prius, suffering from what appeared to be multiple gunshot wounds. LAFD paramedics responded to the scene and transported the victim to a local hospital where he later died as a result of his injuries.

At this time, detectives have little information and are seeking the public’s assistance regarding the incident that occurred in the area of the freeway or possibly on the on-ramp near Vermont Avenue and Redondo Beach Boulevard.

For five consecutive years California has stood on the edge of a budgetary abyss. The state’s credit rating has been seriously eroded. Severe cuts have been made in key social programs with profound implications for the dignity of the human person and the nature of our social compact. Decades of disparate policy in the areas of tax, expenditure and pension structures have created ever-increasing dilemmas with no short-term solution.

Yet amidst this deepening fiscal crisis, political dialogue has failed to identify a path forward, despite strenuous efforts by many in state government. Partisan dynamics have blocked the crafting of hard but necessary solutions that will genuinely address the enduring problems built into California’s budgetary house of cards. Major elements necessary for genuine remedies for our state’s financial woes are declared “off the table” by both political parties as well as by the vested interests that support them. Policy is dictated more by stalemate and impasse rather than by a search for compromise on solutions that will best serve the interests of all Californians.

In such a climate it is necessary to underscore that the budgetary struggle crippling California is not merely political in nature or implications. Rather, it concerns profound moral questions about who are we as a society, how we view our future and whether as a people we can look beyond our own self-interest to the interest of the larger society. Much of the inability of our political leaders to forge workable solutions to the real budget dilemmas arises from the lack of a common moral frame of reference for evaluating the tradeoffs that lie before us.

For this reason we speak as the Catholic bishops of California on the budgetary crisis that confronts our state. We speak as pastors of those who operate California’s small and large businesses, who teach in our schools, who work in our fields, who staff our local governments, who are unemployed. We also speak as providers of education, social and health services who know firsthand the effects of cutbacks in programs that form the social safety net of our state. We speak as employers who meet payrolls in our parishes, schools and social service agencies, and who understand the problems of rising costs, particularly in the field of health care. Most of all we speak out of the two thousand year old tradition of ethical analysis and moral insight that is contained in Catholic social teaching. We hope that our tradition, in concert with those of other religious communities, can provide a frame of reference for a deeper and ethically-infused public dialogue about the budgetary problems that confront our state.

What: During the week prior to the Special Olympics Summer Games, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department personnel will proudly join athletes and officers from nearly 300 different law enforcement agencies and military personnel for the Torch Run for more than 1,500 miles.

The public is encouraged to come out and support the runners and athletes as the torch passes by.

The torch (known as the “Flame of Hope”) will be used to light the Opening Ceremony cauldron which symbolizes the start of the 2011 Summer Games.

Why: The Law Enforcement Torch Run is the largest grassroots fundraiser and public awareness vehicle for Special Olympics worldwide. In 2010, officers raised more than $1.2 million for Special Olympics Southern California.

Caltrans Opens Angeles Crest Highway (SR-2)

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) announced the opening the Angeles Crest Highway (SR-2) between La Cañada Flintridge and the Angeles Forest Highway (a county road) at a press conference today at the entrance of the Angeles National Forest.

Motorists can now access the highway from La Cañada Flintridge to Wrightwood.
The heavy rains during mid-January 2010 caused several mudslides and road washouts along SR-2 in the Angeles National Forest. Portions of the asphalt and the fill under the road wash away leaving large gaps in the roadway. Washouts ranged between 50 to 110 feet along the highway and about 200 feet below it at some locations, making the highway unsafe and impassable.

“Obviously, this work has taken quite some time,” said Deputy District 7 Director of Construction Roy Fisher. “With steep and severe terrain, Mother Nature, and extremely damaged roadway, it was no quick or simple task to rebuild. Each solution was very complex.”

At this time the highway has been re-oiled to add more use-life and re-striped and the highway is ready to be opened to the general public.

“This was a major undertaking that required the expertise and skill of Caltrans engineers, geologists, biologists, maintenance crews, and many other staff,” said Fisher. “The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has been a great partner that has helped to move the repairs along and help cover most of the state’s costs.”

There are still two storm-damaged sections of SR-2, a rock slide east of Mount Wilson Road and a washout east of Snow Creek. Both these locations are still under repair, but traffic control will be in place to allow motorists to pass through the area.

Burns Pacific Construction, Inc. of Thousand Oaks, Calif. is the contractor on this $32 million emergency project. The majority of the funds will be reimbursed by the FHWA’s emergency relief program.

Dr. Jack Kevorkian, the central figure in the tumultuous national drama surrounding assisted suicide, died Friday in Royal Oak, Mich., his lawyer told the Associated Press. He was 83 and had been hospitalized with pneumonia and a recurring kidney condition. Dr. Kevorkian, a medical pathologist who challenged social taboos about disease and dying, defied prosecutors and the courts to help terminally ill patients end their lives at times of their own choosing. He spent eight years in prison after being convicted of second-degree murder in the death of the last of the more than 100 patients whose suicides he assisted starting in 1990. His stubborn and often intemperate advocacy for the right of the terminally ill to choose how they die is widely credited with sparking a boom in hospice care in the United States, and with making physicians more sympathetic to their pain and more willing to prescribe medication to relieve it.

Lawyers for former Democratic vice presidential nominee John Edwards expect that he will be indicted Friday on federal campaign finance charges after plea agreement talks with the Justice Department broke down, a person familiar with the negotiations said.

A federal grand jury in North Carolina has been examining Edwards's role in funneling money from political donors to a former campaign aide, Rielle Hunter, in a possible attempt to cover up an extramarital affair.

Phillip and Nancy Garrido were sentenced today to prison terms in the kidnapping and rape of Jaycee Lee Dugard. In a courtroom in Placerville, Calif., Phillip Garrido, 60, was sentenced to 431 years to life in prison. His 55-year-old wife Nancy was sentenced to 36 years in prison.
